The playwright, songwriter and actor Noël Coward personified English elegance and wit. He first achieved fame starring in his own play The Vortex in 1924 and went on to write many successful plays, including Hay Fever (1925), Private Lives (1930), Cavalcade (1931) as well as the classic film Brief Encounter (1945), as well as a string of wonderful songs.
